We hosted the 5th edition of the Privacy Symposium Africa in Mauritius. We spoke about so many diverging and very important topics across data protection in Africa right now.
This event has helped me professionally and personally. Being the host, it was quite challenging to ensure that the event goes on smoothly. I liked the master classes that Unwanted Witness made possible for the three days. They were very professionally delivered. The discussions have been so enriching, filled with recommendations and solutions to the existing problems and challenges in Data Protection and Privacy in Africa. We need to join hands together with all stakeholders to make data protection a reality and a priority in our motherland.

I’m excited to have attended the PSA 2023. I had the opportunity to moderate a couple of panels starting with women in privacy and it was such a remarkable discussion.
The women were excited to see and hear a regulator share her life’s journey, her entire process of becoming the regulator, and the person she is.
I also enjoyed the panel with the Chief Privacy Officer from IFC(International Finance Corporation). He shared about DIFC’s work in Africa and their commitment to data protection and privacy.
I also had a panel with various African regulators, which was the event’s highlight. This conference has been phenomenal and we need more of this.

I am so happy to have been part of PSA 2023. I presented a master class but more importantly, I got to meet a lot of people from the regulatory communities in Africa, from the private sector in Africa. Making those connections was the most valuable thing. I learned about the experiences that people have in various contexts around the continent and it helped put things into perspective. It is really exciting to see how the focus and excitement about data privacy moving forward and I am excited about the future of data privacy here in Africa and I am proud to be a part of it. I enjoyed my time and hopefully look forward to being a part of it again sometime in the future.

First of all thanks to all the stakeholders for organising such a wonderful program and giving us a platform to meet privacy experts and understand so much about data privacy as a whole. It’s been a privilege attending these master classes which have enlightened us. Privacy has become an area of focus for us especially in the aspect of making people aware of what it is and now we aim to make people much more aware of the importance and need of data privacy. Thank you all for this opportunity.
